Multimedia combined with GPS: until recently no-one would have dreamed of using an audio guide out in the open countryside, but a combination of new technologies has opened up exciting new possibilities. In places where there’s nowhere to put up signs, where tourists wander around on their own and where there are lots of things you’d like to tell them, a GPS signal is the ideal way of getting your content over.

Texetera programmes a TomTom or Garmin GPS device so that the relevant audio content is triggered at exactly the right spot. The device is then installed in a tourist coach or in a city bus, for example. At just the right moment it distributes the signal to the passengers, and hey presto! everyone is obeying the suggestion: “And now look out of the window on your left”…
An iPhone is programmed so that points of interest (POI) are specially marked on the map. It’s always possible for the hiker to see exactly where they are at any given time. Whenever they pass a POI, they can listen to the relevant information, receiving it either automatically, or at the press of a button.
